Recently Microsoft has released, Windows 10 cumulative update KB4565503 for devices running Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020 Update) that include improvements and bug fixes for the OS. Here is the solution that worked for Me!

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.  (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter: SC config trustedinstaller start=auto
  4. Restart the PC.

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status: Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

Perform a clean boot

Temporarily Disable security software (antivirus) if installed, and disconnect VPN connection. Then check for updates, install the available updates and then turn on your antivirus protection.

Clean booting your computer may also help to fix the problem If any third party software causing confliction to download & install windows updates.

  1. Go to the search box > type msconfig
  2. Select System Configuration > go to the Services tab.
  3. Select Hide all Microsoft services > Disable all.

Hide all Microsoft services Go to Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all the unnecessary services running there. Restart your computer and check for updates.

If none above solutions fix the problem for you, still windows update fails to install or stuck checking updates for hours, it might be that something went wrong with the update files itself. Clearing the folder where all of the update files are stored will force Windows Update to download fresh files. Here how to clear update database cache, reset windows update components to the default setup.

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc and ok to open windows services.
  • Scroll down and look for windows update service.
  • Right-click on it and select stop.
  • Also, do the same with BITs (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) and Superfetch (superfetch now called sysmain) right-click and select stop.
  • Now Go to the following location .C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.
  • Delete everything inside the download folder, but do not delete the folder itself.
  • To do so, press CTRL + A to select everything and then press Delete to remove the files.
  • Again open windows services and restart the services (windows update, BITS) which you previously stopped.
  • Restart Windows, and check for updates from settings, update & security.

For the most recently released update, note down the KB number.

Now use Windows Update Catalog Website to search for the update specified by the KB number you noted down. Download the update depending on if your machine is 32-bit = x86 or 64-bit=x64.

As of Today – KB4565503 (OS Build 19041.388) is the latest update for Windows 10 version  2004 and KB4565483 (OS Build 18362.959 and 18363.959) is the latest update for Windows 10 version 1903 and 1909.
